Hoof
Ungula
Definition
In Horses, Donkeys and Ruminants, the hoof (Ungula) forms with the set of organs that it contains the region erroneously called 'foot'. It is a coreous box (Capsula ungulae) containing, between other organs, the distal interphalangeal joint (called foot joint) and the distal phalanx (called 'foot bone' or 'coffin bone'), as well as amortization organs.
In Equidae, we recognise three part to this box: the wall (Paris ungulae), only visible when the hoof is in support, the sole (Solea) and the frog (Cuneus ungulae) that is missing in the hoofs of the other Ungulates. The proximal part of the wall is covered by a thin peeling epidermic strap: the periople.
