Lateral malleolus

Malleolus lateralis

Definition

The lateral malleolus (Malleolus lateralis) actually belongs to the fibula, of which it constitutes the distal end. Only in the species in which the fibula is merged with the tibia (Equidae, Glires) does the lateral malleolus belong, at least in appearance, to the tibia.

It shows in Equidae a groove of longitudinal tendinous passage (Sulcus malleolaris).

In the species in which the fibula stays distinct from the tibia at its distal part, the tibia has no lateral malleolus but a great fibular notch (Incisura fibularis), in which the fibula articulates.
