Lyssa

Lyssa

Definition

IMAIOS

In carnivores, the ventral part of the tongue contains a rodshaped fibrous body, the lyssa, which lies in the median plane, beneath the ventral mucosa. It extends from almost the tip of the tongue to root of the tongue, but does not reach the hyoid bone. It is encapsulated in a dense sheath of connective tissue, which is filled with adipose tissue, striated muscle and, occasionally, islands of cartilage.
