Sternebrae
Sternebrae
Definition
A sternebra is one of the eight bones that make up the sternum.
The sternum is formed of eight sternebrae arranged in series and separated by intersternal cartilages. However, in some species, it can also be fused by synostosis.
The first sternebra, called the manubrium, and the last sternebra, called the xiphoid process, are distinguished from the rest of the sternebrae.
Variation:
In dogs and cats, the sternebrae remain separated from each other.
