Sublingual caruncle

Caruncula sublingualis

Definition

Eman Amr

Sublingual caruncle are small, papilla-like elevations located on either side of the frenulum linguae. Each caruncle serves as the opening site for the excretory ducts of the mandibular salivary gland and the major sublingual salivary gland. In most domestic species, two ductal openings are present, one for each gland. However, in the horse, only a single opening exists because the major sublingual salivary gland is absent in this species.
