Ventral tubercle

Tuberculum ventrale

Definition

On the ventral arch of the atlas (CI) is the unpair ventral tubercle, that may take the form of a conical process in dogs. On it is inserted the musculis longus colli.

Note : This “ventral tubercle” has been omitted from the 6th edition of the official Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria but is cited in the Miller or Barone. It should not be confused with the “ventral tubercle of cervical vertebrae” (included in NAV), that is present from CIII to CV, and is a paired process on cranioventral end of transverse processes.
