面神经由运动部分和感觉部分组成，后者通常以中间神经（Wrisberg的中间部）之名描述。
感觉根起自膝神经节，该神经节位于面神经管内面神经的[面神经]中间神经处，在面神经管裂孔的后方。该神经节的细胞为单极细胞，其单一突起以T形方式分为中枢支和周围支。中枢支在内耳道内离开面神经干，形成感觉根；周围支延续为鼓索和岩大浅神经。感觉根的纤维在脑桥下缘于运动根与听神经之间进入脑内，穿入延髓实质，终止于舌咽神经终末核的上部及孤束。
