Anterior horn of medial meniscus
Cornu anterius menisci medialis
- Related terms: Anterior horn
Definition
The anterior horn of the medial meniscus is the anterior-most portion of the medial meniscus, which attaches to the tibial plateau via variable insertion patterns. Most commonly, it inserts into the anterior intercondylar area of the tibia, either lateral or medial to the medial tibial spine, but anatomical studies have identified several variants, including insertion on the anterior slope of the tibial plateau, attachment to the anterior intermeniscal ligament, or, rarely, absence of firm bony attachment.
The anterior horn is stabilized by its tibial attachment and, in some cases, by the anterior intermeniscal ligament, which can serve as its primary anchor when a bony insertion is absent.
