Anterior papillary muscle of right ventricle
Musculus papillaris anterior ventriculi dextri
- Related terms: Anterior papillary muscle
Definition
The anterior papillary muscle of the right ventricle is the largest and most consistently present papillary muscle in the right ventricle. It arises from the lateral wall of the mid-right ventricle, in the middle third of the ventricular wall, and is often flat-topped or truncated in shape.
This muscle is closely associated with the septomarginal trabecula (moderator band), which frequently connects its base to the interventricular septum, providing structural support and facilitating conduction via the right bundle branch.
The anterior papillary muscle provides chordae tendineae to both the anterior and posterior leaflets of the tricuspid valve, particularly along their line of coaptation, and may also supply chordae to adjacent segments of the septal leaflet.
