Infrahyoid bursa

Bursa infrahyoidea

Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

The infrahyoid bursa is a small synovial bursa situated between the thyrohyoid membrane and the infrahyoid muscles, particularly near the thyroid cartilage and hyoid bone. According to Paraskevas (2011, Folia Morphologica, the bursa is enclosed within the thyrohyoid membrane, which itself is classified among “ligaments containing bursal elements.”

The infrahyoid bursa could potentially reduce friction between the laryngeal framework and overlying strap muscles during movements of swallowing and phonation.
