Lateral border of scapula
Margo lateralis scapulae
- Related terms: Lateral border; Lateral border (Scapula)
Definition
The lateral border of scapula, also referred to as the axillary border, is a thick and robust edge that extends from the inferior angle to the glenoid cavity. This border is notable for its small bony prominence, the infraglenoid tubercle, located just below the glenoid cavity.
Muscles attached to the lateral border of scapula
The lateral border serves as an attachment site for several important muscles involved in shoulder and arm movement.
Teres major: This muscle originates from the lower one-third of the dorsal surface of the lateral border of scapula. It inserts into the medial lip of the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus and facilitates adduction and medial rotation of the arm.
Teres minor: This muscle originates from the upper two-thirds of the dorsal surface of the lateral border of scapula. It inserts into the inferior facet of the greater tubercle of the humerus. As a part of the rotator cuff, it contributes to lateral rotation and stabilization of the shoulder joint.
Long head of triceps brachii: This is the primary muscle that attaches to the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula. It originates at this bony landmark and extends along the posterior aspect of the arm, eventually inserting into the olecranon process of the ulna.
