Supraglenoid tubercle
Tuberculum supraglenoideum
- Latin synonym: Tuberculum supraglenoidale
Definition
The supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula is a small bony prominence located at the superior aspect of the glenoid cavity. It serves as the attachment point for the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii muscle. This tendon originates from the supraglenoid tubercle, traverses the shoulder joint, and continues within the bicipital groove of the humerus. Functionally, this tendon plays a crucial role in shoulder stability by preventing anterior and superior translation of the humeral head.
