Definition
The middle layer of thoracolumbar fascia (Intermediate layer of thoracolumbar fascia) is one of the three layers of the of thoracolumbar fascia in the lumbar region.
The middle layer (previously called anterior layer) is located between the posterior surface of Quadratus lumborum and the anterior surface of Erector spinae muscle.
It is attached, medially, to the tips of the transverse processes of the lumbar vertebrae and to the intertransverse ligaments, below, to the iliolumbar ligament, and above, to the lumbocostal ligament.
Laterally, the middle layer unites with the two other layers the thoracolumbar fascia at the lateral margin of the Sacrospinalis, to form the tendon of origin of the Transversus abdominis. The aponeurosis of origin of the Serratus posterior inferior and the Latissimus dorsi are intimately blended with the lumbodorsal fascia.
