- Latin synonym: Tuber parietale
- Synonym: Parietal tuber
- Related terms: Parietal tuber; Parietal eminence
Definition
Parietal eminence is a smooth and rounded area found on the external surface of the parietal bone, one on each side of the skull. This spot is the most convex part of the parietal bone, giving the skull its rounded appearance. It’s usually more pronounced in men than in women and acts as a key reference point in the study of skull measurements. This feature can also help determine the gender of a skull. Embryologically, the parietal eminence is the site where intramembranous ossification of the parietal bone begins during development.
