Definition

Spinal area X (or Rexed lamina X) refers to the spinal gray matter that surrounds the central canal of the spinal cord. It is also called the central intermediate substance of spinal cord. The Spinal area X can be divided into posterior (dorsal) and anterior (ventral) gray commissures, behind and in front of the central canal, respectively. The anterior gray commissure interconnects the anterior or ventral horns, while the posterior gray commissure interconnects the posterior or dorsal horns of gray matter–of the right and left spinal halves–with each other.
