Musculi suprahyoidei

Definition

Antoine Micheau & Muhammad A. Javaid

The suprahyoid muscles are a group of four small muscles located above the hyoid bone. They connect the hyoid bone to the mandible and skull base, forming the floor of the mouth and playing key roles in swallowing and speech. These include:

Actions

  • Elevate the hyoid bone during swallowing and speech.

  • When hyoid is fixed, depress the mandible, assisting in mouth opening.
