Depression of optic disc
Excavatio disci
- Synonym: Physiological cup of optic disc
Definition
Depression of the optic disc refers to a localized excavation or deepening of the optic nerve head, seen as the central cup within the optic disc. This depression is formed by the convergence and exit of retinal ganglion cell axons through the lamina cribrosa, a sieve-like structure of connective tissue at the base of the disc.
