Distal tibiofibular joint

Articulatio tibiofibularis distalis

Definition

IMAIOS

The distal tibiofibular joint (Articulatio tibiofibularis distalis) is replaced by an early synostose in Rabbits and Equidae. In other species, it is nearly a dependency of the crurotarsal joint. The articular surfaces are not very extended; the one of the tibia is excavated in a fibular notch; the one of the fibula is convex in the cranio-caudal direction; more or less according to the species.

In Ruminants, the fibula is represented by the external malleolus.
