Metencephalon
Metencephalon
Definition
The metencephalon is the part of the hindbrain that differentiates into the pons and the cerebellum. It contains a portion of the fourth ventricle and the trigeminal nerve (CN V), abducens nerve (CN VI), facial nerve (CN VII), and a portion of the vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII). It connects the mesencephalon to the myelencephalon.
The cerebellum has a direct role in motor control and is necessary for several types of motor learning. The pons is the region of the brainstem that contains neural pathways and tracts that conduct signals from the brain down to the cerebellum and medulla, and tracts that carry the sensory signals up into the thalamus
