Pes hippocampi [Ammon's horn]

Pes hippocampi [Cornu ammonis]

  • Latin eponym: Ammon's horn

Definition

Juliette Garnodier

The Ammon’s horn is a part of the archicortex located in the rhinencephalon, forming a gyrus. It is composed of three main layers (molecular, double pyramidal, and polymorphic) and divided into zones extending from the subiculum to the dentate gyrus.

It is a cylindroidal structure named for its resemblance to the two horns of a ram (the ancient Egyptian god Ammon was depicted with a ram’s head).
