Plantar tarsometatarsal ligaments

Ligamentorum tarsometatarsea plantaria

Definition

The plantar tarsometatarsal ligaments (Ligg.tarsometatarsea plantaria) are always much stronger than the dorsal ones. Very distinct in Men, they are mixed in domestic Mammals in a thick fibrocartilaginous formation that include the distal plantar intermetatarsal ligaments and in Ruminants and Equidae, the distal plantar intertarsal ligaments and even the calcaneonavicular. This is how is constituted, in animals, the vast distal plantar ligament, that gives origin to the interosseus muscles of the metatarsus and to the retinaculum of tarsal extensors (that is weaker than the retinaculum of carpal extensors and is missing in Donkeys. In Pigs, some beams isolate more or less to maintain the metatarsal sesamoid bone.
