Pleural cupula
Cupula pleurae
Definition
The pleural cupula is the cranial extension of the parietal pleura into the thoracic inlet. It is part of the costal pleura and projects beyond the first rib into the root of the neck.
Key Points:
It covers the apex of the lung, particularly the cranial lobe in species like the dog and cat.
This structure is clinically important because it can be vulnerable to penetrating injuries at the thoracic inlet, which may cause pneumothorax.
The extent and prominence of the pleural cupula vary among species. For example, in ruminants and horses, it can be more pronounced on one side.
The term pleural cupula (cupula of the pleura) may not be confused with the term diaphragmatic cupula.
