Parietal pleura

Pleura parietalis

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The parietal pleura is the outer layer of the pleura that lines the chest wall, diaphragm, and mediastinum.

It is a serous membrane composed of a superficial layer of metabolically active mesothelial cells facing the pleural space and an underlying connective tissue layer.

The parietal pleura is attached to the inner surface of the thoracic cavity, covering the chest wall, diaphragm, and mediastinal structures. It merges with the visceral pleura (which covers the lung surface) at the hilum of the lungs.
