Temporohyoid joint

Articulatio temporohyoidea

Definition

The temporohyoid joint ensures, on each side, the attach of the hyoid bone to the styloid process of the temporal bone, or the impression that replaces it.

It is, in domestic Mammals, a symphysis constituted by the interposition of the cartilaginous tympanohyoid between the stylohyoid and the temporal bone. The tympanohyoid is proportionally shorter in Equidae and especially in Ruminants than in other animals. In Men, it is a simple cartilaginous sheet that ossifies very soon ,sothat the stylohyoid is annexed to the temporal bone and becomes its styloid process.
