Definition
The hyoid apparatus is a set of several bony structures which act as a suspension mechanism for the tongue and larynx.
It attaches to the styloid processes of the temporal bones dorsally and to the larynx and base of the tongue ventrally. It is located in the caudal part of the space between the bodies of the mandibles. The constituent parts of the hyoid apparatus are linked by synchondroses and are: the basihyoid, thyrohyoid, ceratohyoid, epihyoid and stylohyoid.
