Basihyoid [Body]

Basihyoideum [Corpus]

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The bashyoid is the only uneven component of the hyoid apparatus.

Located in the muscles at the root of the tongue, it is shaped like a thick, short, more or less arched transverse bar. Its dorsocaudal surface is concave. It articulates proximally with the ceratohyoid and distally with the thyrohyoid. Depending on the species, it is extended rostrally by the lingual process.
