Epihyoid

Epihyoideum

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The epihyoid is one of the components of the hyoid apparatus. Its shape varies greatly between species: it is reduced to a simple bony nodule in the horse, a short blade in cattle and a long, slender shaft in the dog.

The epihyoid runs approximately parallel to the thyrohyoid and articulates proximally with the stylohyoid and distally with the ceratohyoid at an almost right angle.
