Stylohyoid
Stylohyoideum
Definition
The stylohyoid is one of the components of the hyoid apparatus and is generally the longest.
It is highly developed in horses and ruminants and is flattened in its dorsocaudal portion: it is extended caudally by an expansion called the stylohyoid angle.
In the dog, the stylohyoid is slightly longer than the epihyoid, with which it articulates. It is slightly flattened craniocaudally and clearly curved towards the median plane. Its size increases progressively from the proximal to the distal end, with both ends slightly enlarged.
