Lingual process

Processus lingualis

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The lingual process (Processus lingualis) is the rostral prominence of the basihyoid, in the sagittal plane.

It is located in the root of the tongue and serves as an insertion site for the mylohyoid, geniohyoid and hyoglossal muscles.

In the horse, the lingual process is highly developed. It is much shorter in bovine, reduced to a large tubercle, and in sheep, goats and rabbits. It is limited to a small point in pigs and non-existent in carnivores.
