Geniohyoid muscle

Musculus geniohyoideus

Definition

The geniohyoid muscle is a fusiform muscle that extends from the intermandibular articulation parallel to the midventral line, to the basihyoid bone.

Origin: intermandibular articulation

Insertion: basihyoid bone

Action: draw the hyoid apparatus cranially as during swallowing and to maintain a patent airway

Nerve: hypoglossal nerve
