Thyrohyoid muscle

Musculus thyrohyoideus [thyreo-]

Definition

The thyrohyoid muscle is a short flat muscle from insertion of sternohyoid muscle to thyrohyoid bone.

Origin: lamina of the thyroid cartilage

Insertion: most caudal border of the thyrohyoid bone

Action: draw the hyoid apparatus caudally and dorsally

Nerve: hypoglossal nerve, and occasionally first cervical nerve
