Stylohyoid muscle

Musculus stylohyoideus

Definition

The stylohyoid muscle is a small muscle from tympanohyoid and stylohyoid to basihyoid, superficial to the digastric muscle. In horses, the tendon is split by the passage of the intermediate tendon of the digastric muscle.

Origin: tympanphyoid and proximal end of stylohyoid

Insertion: lateral end of basihyoid

Action: raise the basihyoid bone

Nerve: facial nerve
