Intermandibular joint

Articulatio intermandibularis

Definition

The body of each mandible unites to its opposite by its incisive part forming the intermandibular joint. It is soon invaded by the ossification and fades in Men, Equidae ,Camelidaes, Pigs, as well as in numerous other Mammals, where the two mandible are merged into a single bone;. This synostose is late in Rabbits.

In Carnivorous, Bulls, Sheeps, Goats, the joint is partly cartilaginous (intermandibular synchondrose) and a large fibrous part (intermandibular suture); the ossification never invades it and the mandibles stay distinct during the whole life.
