Trochlea of talus
Trochlea tali
Definition
The trochlea of talus is a convex articular surface for the proximal part of articulation with tibia and fibula (only with tibia in horses). The trochlea presents a sagittal groove that articulates with the sagittal ridge of cochlea of tibia.
The trochlea presents a calcaneal articular surface, located plantarly, for articulation with the calcaneus. This surface is divided in carnivores and horses by a proximodistal groove, the sulcus tali.
The trochlea presents also in carnivores and horses a navicular articular surface, located distally, for articulation with central tarsal bone.
In horses, on the medial aspect of the trochlea, is the tubercle of talus for attachment of dorsal tarsometarsal ligament.
In ruminants, the distal trochlea of talus is well defined, so the trochlea is divided in two parts: the proximal trochlea for articulation with tibia and malleolar bone, and the distal trochlea for articulation with central tarsal bone and tarsal bone IV.
