上颌神经外侧上后鼻支作为一组约七条神经，起自翼腭窝内的翼腭神经节。这些神经穿过鼻腔外侧壁的蝶腭孔，最终支配鼻腔外侧壁上鼻甲和中鼻甲表面的黏膜及腺体，以及筛窦后气房。
请注意，其余不支配外侧壁的鼻支，穿越鼻腔顶部，以上颌神经内侧上后鼻支的形式分布于鼻腔内侧壁。
