Descending branch of left colic artery
Ramus descendens arteriae colicae sinistrae
Definition
The descending branch of the left colic artery is an arterial branch that arises from the left colic artery, which itself is typically the first branch of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA). After the left colic artery originates from the IMA, it courses to the left, crossing anterior to the left ureter and gonadal vessels, and divides into an ascending branch and a descending branch.
The descending branch travels inferiorly along the descending colon, running within or near the mesentery close to the colonic wall. It supplies the mid-to-distal portion of the descending colon and contributes to the arterial arcade (marginal artery of Drummond) by anastomosing with branches of the sigmoid arteries below. This anastomotic network is critical for maintaining collateral blood flow to the left colon.
