Caudal costal facet

Fovea costalis caudalis

Definition

Géraldine Lefeuvre, Andréa Lopes da Costa

The caudal costal facet is an articular surface located on the caudal aspect of the body of a thoracic vertebra that articulates with a rib.

It participates in the articulation of the costal head, where the cranial costal facet receives the cranial half of the articular facet of the costal head, while the other half articulates with the caudal costal facet of the immediately cranial vertebra.

Variation:

In dogs, it is present from the first to the eleventh thoracic vertebra, although the eleventh is frequently lacking it.

In cats, it is present from the first to the tenth thoracic vertebra.
