Caudate lobe

Lobus caudatus

  • Eponym: Spiegelian

Definition

The caudate lobe lies dorsal to the porta hepatis and is composed by two processes and the isthmus of liver that connects them:

  • The papillary process is the left cranial part of the caudate lobe, projecting into the vestibule of the omental bursa.
  • The caudate process is the elongated right projection that forms the visceral surface of the caudate lobe. Its caudolateral portion is deeply recessed by the cranial half of the right kidney. in dogs, the parenchyma of the caudated process is usually partly fused to the right lateral lobe, but occasionally the two portions are completely separated.
