Cementum

Definition

Estelle Demange

In brachydonts, the cementum is a mineralized tissue that covers the roots of teeth. It plays a crucial role in tooth attachment and the maintenance of periodontal health. Cementum is part of the periodontium, which includes the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and gingiva, and it helps anchor the teeth within the alveolar bone by providing a medium for the attachment of the periodontal ligament fibers.

In hypsodonts, the cementum covers the majority of the tooth.
