Enamel

Enamelum

Definition

Estelle Demange

In brachydonts, the enamel is the outermost layer of the tooth crown and is the hardest and most mineralized tissue in the body. The mature enamel is approximately 95% mineral by weight, with the remaining 5% consisting of water and organic material. This high mineral content is responsible for enamel's exceptional hardness and its ability to withstand the mechanical forces of mastication.

In hypsodonts, the enamel is mostly covered in cement.
