Coxal bone
Os coxae
Definition
The coxal bone is composed of three bones: the ilium, the ischium, and the pubis. They converge to form the acetabulum, a cavity in which the head of the femur articulates. The ilium is the largest of the three bones. It consists dorsally of a wide wing and ventrally of a narrower and more robust body. It articulates with the sacrum at the auricular surface. The dorsal fusion of the ilium and the ischium gives rise to the ischial spine. The ischium is a flat bone, located ventrally. Its cranial part joins the ilium and the pubis to form the acetabulum. The pubis is the smallest of the three bones. It is made up of a cranial branch and a caudal branch.
