Dens

Dens

Definition

Andréa Lopes da Costa

The dens is the cranial eminence on the body of the axis. It articulates with the fovea for dens on the ventral arch of the atlas and serves as a pivot for rotation of the head and atlas.

This articulation is achieved through the presence of a ventral articular surface and a dorsal articular surface.

Variation:

The dorsal articular fossa is present only in carnivores and pigs.
