Definition
The ventral articular surface is the cartilaginous surface located on the ventral face of the dens of the axis.
It articulates with the fovea for dens located on the ventral arch of the atlas.
Variation:
In horses and cattle, this surface is fused with the cranial articular surfaces.
In other species, it remains distinct.
