In carnivores, the joint capsules of proximal interphalangeal joints are similar to the ones of metacarpophalangeals with dorsal and palmar recess (pouches) and a cartilagenous enforcement dorsally.

In horses, the articular cavity of the proximal interphalangeal joint presents four recesses :

  • A dorsal recess
  • A palmar recess
  • Two distodorsocollateral recesses (lateral and medial, accorded to JM Denoix, not listed in the NAV)
