Fascial sheath of eyeball
Vagina bulbi
- Eponym: Tenon
Definition
The fascial sheath of the eyeball is a fibro-elastic membrane that covers the eyeball from the optic nerve to the ciliary region. It separates the eyeball from the orbital fat body, and is separated from the sclera by the episcleral space, creating an envelope that facilitates eye movement.
The fascial sheath of the eyeball is perforated by various vessels and nerves, mainly around the entrance to the optic nerve. It is also perforated by the muscles of the eyeball, on which the membrane reflects, being in continuity with the muscular fascias.
