Conjunctiva
Tunica conjunctiva
Definition
The conjunctiva is a mucous membrane that covers the posterior surface of the eyelids and reflects on the anterior part of the eyeball, on part of the sclera and the cornea.
The conjunctiva is composed of a basal membrane and a non-keratinized squamous stratified epithelium. The conjunctiva helps lubricate the eye, producing mucus that forms part of the tear film, thanks to the presence of conjunctival glands. These glands are present in large numbers, particularly in the fornix of the conjunctiva.
The conjunctiva is divided into bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva. The space between the two is called the conjunctival sac, and is delimited by the superior and inferior fornixes, where the conjunctiva reflects.
