Head of femur

Caput ossis femoris

Definition

The head of femur is located medially on the proximal extremity of femur. It is covered by an hemispherical articular surface (articulated with acetabulum) with a central circular notch called fovea (for attachment of ligament of femoral head). In horses, the fovea is not circular but wedge-shaped and open to the periphery medially for the attachment of accessory ligament of femur.
