Area lateralis musculus recti femoris

Definition

The recti femoris muscle is inserted in front of the acetabulum of the coxal bone on an insertion surface (Area musculus recti femoris) whose disposition varies according to the species:

  • In Equidae: a lateral and a medial fossae (the medial and lateral area of recti femoris (Area medialis and lateralis musculus recti femoris)
  • in Ruminants and Pigs: a single medial fossa
  • in Dogs and Rabbits, a tubercle
  • in Men, on a strong tubercle, proportionally further from the acetabulum and termed the antero-inferior iliac spine
