Tegmentum of midbrain
Tegmentum mesencephali
Definition
The tegmentum is the most dorsal part of the cerebral peduncle, one of the regions of the midbrain.
It contains both gray and white matter and houses several important nuclei and pathways. Among these is the red nucleus, the largest nucleus of the midbrain tegmentum.
The tegmentum is involved in the maintenance of wakefulness, the modulation of sleep, the initiation of locomotion, and the voluntary control of movement via the red nucleus.
