Tendinous center of the perineum [Perineal body]

Centrum tendineum perinei [Corpus perineale]

Definition

Antoine Micheau

the tendinous center of the perineum (perineal body) is a fibromuscular structure located in the midline of the perineum. It serves as a central point of attachment for several perineal muscles, including the external anal sphincter, bulbospongiosus, and superficial and deep transverse perineal muscles.

This structure plays an important role in:

  • Supporting the pelvic organs,

  • Maintaining perineal integrity during defecation, urination, and parturition,

  • Providing a stable anchor for muscle contractions involved in tail and urogenital functions.
